    Default Cooling at Low Airspeeds

Does anybody have experience or data about engine cooling at loitering (60-70mph) airspeeds? I've read that cowled engines cool poorly below 80 mph, which is supposedly why J-3s have open-air scoops rather than cowls.

Never heard of anybody in an S2, or a Carbon Cub, heating up at 60 - 70 mph, unless its full throttle climb at those speeds, on a hot day. In our experience in CA, oil temps and CHTs stay down while putting around low and slow.

Bill. I have had my S2 in Texas now for 4 years and cruising at those speeds does not really increase the oil temp much. It is more at those speeds when climbing at full power like John said that will cause the temps to go up. But with the cowl flaps on now, I have tested a full power climb to 10,000' when the surface temp was 95 degrees and the highest the oil temp got was 195 with cowl flaps full open. Jon
