    Yep, I recognize that I'm a similar risk level as my wife, despite having a lot more hours, etc. Heck, I've been flying an aircraft with a yaw damper, NO rudder flying, and mostly autopilot in the flight levels - totally different skills. And yes, I'll do the same TacAero XCub transition course before I get to fly it. Wife gets to do it first though, as it's HER plane, and she wouldn't let me get training and fly it before she did! I'll be flying home with her this weekend, as a passenger.

    I just got my quote yesterday

    EX3 - $350k CAD Hull value (about 265k USD).

    Just over 100 hrs total time 10 tailwheel
    Only 1/3 Canadian insurers responded, the one that did was at 6800 CAD (about $5000 USD)

    I knew I would be hard to insure, this is still more than I expected. The 2% rate quoted earlier makes me feel a little better.

    I have time to build hours before the ex3 will be completed and flying - this insurance rate makes renting the local club’s citabria look more attractive

    been watching this string.

    Question: Did you contact an aviation insurance broker specialist to quote it out for you? Or did you just go to one or two insurance companies yourself?

    Over the 5 years that Ive been flying tailwheels, and getting insurance each year, Ive found that each year when the broker farmed out the quote around to the various companies, there was a HUGE difference in the quotes! Sometimes as much as 2X.

    It was explained to me that many carriers like to focus on one or two niche areas, and not all of them really want to deal with tailwheel planes. So their quotes are just jacked up.

    Its worth having a broker shop around.

    We got quotes from a broker that TacAero uses for their tailwheel insurance, and also from AOPA. I'd expected AOPA would have shopped it around, but I only see a single underwriter offered, so maybe they don't. We'll do a more comprehensive job of shopping it around next time!

    I guess I'll review the policy now too, maybe we can switch mid-year, if we could find a more cost-effective solution.

    We're at 1.7% of hull value for our XCub with Northwest Insurance, and that's for an experienced tail wheel CFI. Are there any better deals out there?

    I used OLd Republic through Falcon agency on my newly completed EX-2. Hull premium was about 1.2% of agreed value and liability a further $355 ($1M single limit).

    They did require a make and model CFI check-out, so I made a trip to TacAero.

    ~3000 hrs, mostly tailwheel.

    That is also who I have used on all of my carbon cub’s but one thing to keep in mind is that old republic has a $200,000 upper limit on all experimental planes.
