The 2nd Annual Bluegrass Bash is in the books.... and what a fantastic time! Once again, our host and two-time (soon to be four-time) Carbon Cub owner, Dusty McCoy, out-did himself on making this one of the most enjoyable fly-ins in the country.
Located in beautiful Bardstown, KY (the Bourbon Capital of the World), Dusty orchestrated the most unique type of flying experience: an aerial tour of the Bourbon Trial! With the renown Makers Mark Master Distiller, Greg Davis, as our guide, 13 airplanes took to the sky and got a lesson on the production of bourbon. Did you know that just Makers Mark alone uses 21 acres of corn a day to produce their bourbon? There is over 1.8 million barrels aging (53 gallons in a barrel), and Kentucky produces 95% of the world's bourbon. That's a lot of bourbon!
After our Bourbon Trail tour, it was on to Danville, KY where our CubCrafters Service Center, Hammond Aero, served lunch. From there, we split into a couple of groups and flew to some very cool Kentucky airstrips which Dusty arranged for us. After the airplanes were all tucked away, Friday night was enjoyed around the pool with a bourbon tasting and Greg Davis serving up some of the best BBQ you could put in your mouth.
Saturday morning we took off for a grass strip in southern Kentucky and flew over beautiful Lake Cumberland with our own David Morris as our tour guide. Thank you David! More flying and landing at awesome airstrips in the afternoon, and then off to eat again (our motto for the weekend was "Eat, Fly, Eat, Eat, Fly"). Lots of food, lots of fun, and of course... lots of flying!
One of the reasons SWT Aviation and CubCrafters enjoys putting on these types of events is to bring the CubCrafters Family together for a "family reunion". A few new owners joined us this year; they were able to meet fellow Cub drivers, talk about their airplanes, and let their airplanes take them on Adventures they didn't know existed. Oh.... the things you can do in a CubCrafters Cub!
Dusty is already working on next year's event (wanting to top this one, but I don't know how he can!). On a side note... Dusty has become very involved with general aviation in Kentucky, especially private grass strips. He's in the process of researching and going to every grass strip in Kentucky, meeting the owners and getting the history of every one of them. He's working on getting more owners to open up their airstrips to visitors and would like to publish a book about backcountry flying in the beautiful "knobs" of Kentucky.
Hope you can join us next year at the Bluegrass Bash!
