We have two Sport Cubs, a 2007 and a 2008, both Cub Yellow with black Z stripes and have removed the "billboard" N numbers with very clean results and no touch up paint. There was some shadowing at first, but after 1 year on N536CS it isn't visible. The second Sport Cub - N5058 - used a little different technique in February 2017 and the shadow is barely visible and only if you know where to look with light in just the right angle.
I used a heat gun on 6CS with fair results, didn't always get the glue off, was difficult to get even heat and required some added work with Goo Gone to remove the residue.
Kim used a bright, older incandescence type of flood lamp on a tripod which puts out a broad, but even swath of light and heat. With the right position of the light, the numbers warmed up evenly, came off very clean and minimum Goo Gone needed. Polishing with a light compound pretty much evened out the area. Putting the black Z strip on was also easy.
