Question New 8.50 x 6 LSA Tundra Tires (4 Ply)

Has anyone tried out the new 8.50 x 6 LSA Tundra tires and have any feedback? Desser shows they are 22" tall which would be taller than regular 8.50s which I have now. Also what tire pressure is recommended? Although only 4 ply they say they are about 10 lbs per tire versus 15 lbs for 8.50s.......

Desser..."Our "Pillow Soft" 22 x 8.50-6 4 Ply stands 22 inches tall and weighs in "featherlight" at under 10 lbs. Compare that to a standard 850-6 6 Ply which average 15 lbs. each."

    Jon,

You may have seen this but it was in today's EX news letter. CC is selling them for the same price as Desser.

For most of us, off-airport takeoffs and landings are the reason we fly a Cub. The rougher the riverbed, the bigger tires required. Unfortunately, Tundra tires are expensive and heavy... until now.

We're very excited to offer Desser's new 8.50 x 6 Aero Classic Tundra. Perfectly sized for real-world missions, this 22-inch tire weighs only 12.2 lbs. (including tube), and it absorbs the bumps without breaking the bank. Price: $175 each.

We mounted the Dessers on our own EX and, during the past three months, put the tires through some rather aggressive testing in Idaho's backcountry. Every pilot who flew them was impressed with their performance.

If cost or weight has kept you from mounting Tundra tires on your Cub, you can stop waiting! Desser's new Classic Tundra is also available as an option for the EX kit and our ready-to-fly aircraft.

I have flown them on the company EX as well as on a Sport Cub S2 (mostly on grass/pavement, not off airport) and really like them. "pillow soft" is a good way to say how they touch down and ride.

I don't know what tire pressures are recommended but have found that about 10 lbs on the lighter plane and closer to 11 or 12 lbs on the heavier plane works well. Much below 8 or 9 and they really look low and the airplane gets harder to push around on the ground.

Can I use this thread to get some advice on tires. I currently have 26inch Airstreaks on my Sports Cub. I'm based at an asphalt runway and only occasionally land at a dirt strip and/or in the Arizona desert. The Airstreaks look cool but I surprised to find they are $2000+ a set, and they are wearing fast.

What would you recommend for this environment buying the Desser tires below, considerably cheaper even with tubes. I assume they will wear just as badly on the asphalt as the Airstreaks but give off field flexibility, and still a good amount of prop clearance.

Or go with something like Air Hawks or Air Tracs - not great in the desert but will outlast the others ?

I would try the new tires. I think you will find they handle in landing and taxi similar to the 26" tires you have now but like you pointed out are much cheaper. And lighter. So you will gain some useful load.

We have not had them in service long enough for me to see how they wear. My gut feeling just by handling the tires is they will wear as good as or better. The neat thing about them is they do have wear indicators so you know how they are doing.

We will have a much better idea how they wear pretty quickly. Our company S2 now has a set and that airplane does a lot of training on pavement.

Thanks Pete - would be interested to hear how the ones on the company S2 wear. I've used tires from Desser before and they have been high quality.

    Robert -

If you try out those Dessers let me know what you think. I have the 26" Airstreaks, but I fly off of grass 100% of the time now. When I was in Phoenix I was using the 850s but did not look as cool. If I were there I would likely go with the Dessers...

I have the 26" tires. If I go to the new 8:50 4 ply Tundra Tires someday, will they fit on my rims? If not, what rims would i need and at what cost? Any other requirements?
    Thanks,
    Duane Frederiksen

They will fit on your 6" wheels with no modifications.

Anyone know if they use the same tube as normal 8.50 x 6 tires? Tried to get a response from CC store....but no answer.
