Default Carbon Cub EX kit with 180 HP

    Hi guys and gals,

    Happy New Year!!

Beautiful day here on the Chesapeake today!!

Question, I am interested in building 1 of the Carbon Cub kits. I am an instrument rated pilot and would want the plane both certified and along with the 180 HP. Not worried about LS.

Can it be certified and can I install the 180 HP motor?

I have some time in a Carbon Cub great little plane for sure!! Perf. is spectacular!

My wife's family is from Juneau AK and going to fly my kit build around the state to get that item off my "bucket list"!!

    Thanks

When you build an EX you will certify it as an "Experimental - Amatuer Built" (EAB). If the plane is equipped with the right instrumentation as required by the FARs for instrument then yes, it can be flown IFR. It won't be certified for instrument flight like a Part 23 certified plane though, it won't need to be. One of the benefits of operatin an EAB IFR is that you can use non-TSO'd instruments as well. That will give you great functionality for a lot less money than the TSO'd electronics.
