Pilot seat is 71" aft of the front of the airplane. Cable is not a straight run and starter is aft of 0 datum. So let's say cable run is 6'. Chart suggests minimum cable gauge should be 6. What do we have? Can't tell by wiring diagram.

CG issues aside for a minute. Moving the current battery and starter solenoid to the firewall would reduce current cable length by 1/2. That alone may fix hot start problems with any battery. You could also add an "emergency" gang switch between the backup ignition battery and the main battery to be used only in those situations where the main battery does not have enough juice to turn the prop.

I note from their website that Flight Design is using a lithium iron phosphate battery as standard.
    I wonder how that's working?

[QUOTE=seastar;5009]Increasing the starter wire gauge is an interesting Idea.
Does anyone at CubCrafters know how much current the starter on a CC draws? Has it been measured?
    I would guess 200-250 amps.

When I was having my starting issues I did measure the amp draw and to my surprise it was only 150amps. That said I still have to trick start it when hot. I still have found the Extreme X2-14 to have the best intial cranking. Best Gary

I replaced my original Power Sonic battery with the Glickle-recommended X2-14. The X2 dropped right in and the wires matched perfectly. I weighed both and the weight is the same at 11.0 pounds.

The cranking power of the X2 is noticably better. I'd say it turns the engine over at twice the speed and that was at temperature of 25º or so. It cranks about like the 15.4 pound Odyssey SBS J battery I had in my PA18.

I am curious about how you measured your starting current?
Normaly it requires a precision shunt to measure starting current.

For others who might want to measure their current - here is a way.
Probably not too accurate but useful none the less.

Hi Bill not scientific mut just used a amp tester on the hot lead to the starter and looked at spike during a start. Best Gary

Question Re: Best battery replacement advice from Cubcrafters?

Could you post the wire gauge used in the starter circuit please?

Has CubCrafters measured the starting current for the CC?
If so, can you post it please?
    Thanks

The wires that carry all of the starter current are 4 gauge.

I don't have the data for our starter current testing in front of me, but what I remember is as the engine was cranking you could see the compression strokes in the current. The peaks were something like 200 or 220, right about what the CCA rating of the battery is, but the average amperage while cranking was lower at about 180 amps.
