    Royce,

    I believe it is due just to vibration normal use. The ones I have seen crack are about in line with the tip of the propeller which can have sound waves coming off of it. Not sure if that has anything to do with it but its one theory.

    All of the planes currently on the production line have that part made of a different material. Can't remember if they changed the thickness and the alloy or just the alloy. It's a softer material now that is not as brittle so it can take the vibration better. This change happened a while back but I don't know exactly what s/n.

    Hi Royce

    I've had a very prompt (and satisfactory) reply from Jeff Glab"
    "Sorry to learn your aircraft has developed a false spar crack. CubCrafters
    became aware of this issue in late 2011 and issued NB00005 as a result
    (NB0005 is attached). Shortly after the factory began using.025 sheet metal
    for the false spar as opposed to .016 to prevent this from occurring.
    Although your aircraft is just outside the warranty period we will cover the
    labor required to complete the repair. The materials required are minimal
    and should be able to be sourced locally."

    I guess if I'd know it was a problem I would have included a check in my preflight and might have detected it before it actually split.

    Just wondering if this is only affects the Sport Cub or the Carbon Cub as well?

    Joseph206;

    All of the CC11 aircraft share the same parts in that area of the wing. The notification bulletin covers both Carbon Cub and Sport Cub.

    Royce, as I think was mentioned above we've changed the aluminum from .016" thick to .025" and haven't seen a problem since. As to exactly what causes it, we don't have 100% proof, but small aircraft are vibration machines and the prop pulses alone coming down the side of the fuselage could have caused this. I know prop pulses do damage to the tailfeather area on other planes all the time.
