    My site is at 1900' msl and has absolutely clear approaches at both ends.
    The problem is , at most, I can squeeze out 600/650' because it's on top of a hill.
    It is flat and I can make it wide to accommodate some cross winds.
    It is located at: 41d 41' 8.32"N, 91d 45' 22.85"W
    I have been flying another airplane that has even higher performance than my Carbon Cub.
    I may buy it for use in Minnesota. It gets in and out easily in less than 200' here in Indiana at 800'msl

    With clear approaches on each end I would be very comfortable with 650' in a Carbon Cub. What is the other airplane? I'm with Randy on wanting longer for guests unless they too are flying a Carbon Cub

    The other airplane is a 100HP Kolb.
    The best thing about it is it has folding wings so it will fit in my garage.
    I would need to build a hangar for the Carbon Cub.
    It is not nearly the airplane the Cub is but at least I could fly while I am up there in the woods.
    500/600' might be short for the Carbon Cub but not for the Kolb.
    I'm not going to allow anyone else to use the strip.

    Bill, I think the best thing you could do is do some testing your self in less than ideal conditions, take some measurements in a controlled test, General Billy Mitchell, B-25 like. If you like what you see during those tests then make your landing strip accordingly, add 30% to the total distance for when mother nature is not playing nice.

    With real good approach clearance and take off clearway, I think you will find the Carbon Cub will do just fine.

    "A stable approach make for a good landing".

    That's exactly what I have been doing Chris.Thanks for the input.
    It Looks like 500' is fine for me allowing for the extra 1000' of elevation.
    I think I will go ahead with the strip next spring when the snow melts.
    If it looks like bad weather I can fly the Cub to ELY (KELO, 35miles) and they have a hangar I can use.
    I may build or buy a Kolb to leave up there in the garage at my cabin. 500' is more than enough for them.

    I have seen at STOL contests sea level on grass 180hp super cub 110', 100hp sportcub 55', and 180hp carboncub 19' takeoffs under those conditions at that time.


    Here is 7AK with a 55' takeoff at the 2010 NW supercub flyin video by Pete Dougherty, Tom Hanni was at 80' in his sportcub and the closest supercub was 110'...it is absolutely amazing what these sport cubs still can do! I wonder what a "S3" what do?

    Almost... as important as reasonable runway length are the approaches. Approaches open from each end allow a great deal of manipulation of any landing. One-way only, or dropping in over trees, or even landing next to trees complicates the problems. R
