Default Need some help from Western Pilots

Picking up a new Carbon Cub in late Oct.
Thought of flying south down coast of Oregon & California
before heading east to Florida. Can anyone tell me
what sort of weather I might expect along the coast that time of year
and if there is any way to get past all the restricted airspace
between Monterey and Santa Barbara in a Cub? Thanks

On the coast itself you should expect morning fog, especially in California. If you like to sleep late and leave at noon you'll be fine. You might visit the coast during the day but stay inland a bit somewhere if you like to leave early.

I've done that trip east from YKM enough times I'm using my toes now to tally them up. Most all of them came east of the Mississippi to their final destination. Former CC employee, current and ongoing ferry pilot. Feel free to call or email and I'll give you a thorough rundown. My last delivery was a Carbon Cub picked up a year ago and flown to Jupiter, FL in four days. Its a fun trip no matter which route you take. I've crossed the Rockies from Flathead all the way down to El Paso, lots of good routes to choose from. Willing to help.

That would be a long trip. Weather permitting I would go south along the east side of the Cascades to Redmond, OR, then to Redding, CA down the San Juoaquin Valley of California to Palmdale then turn east to Florida.

I live in San Luis Obispo, California. The only restricted area on the immediate coast between Monterey and Santa Barbara is R-2517 at Vandenberg, AFB. If you talk to SBA approach you will find that space is often cold if there are no launches scheduled and they will let you go through that area. Fog and stratus along the coast is the bigger issue.

    Hello Everyone,
Thanks for the Western flying advice.
It will be an adventure. Sounds like it is better
to avoid the coast because of frequent fog.
I guess I will be better off staying east of the
    Cascades.
Who can tell me the best RPM setting to
plan 2.5 hour legs with some reserve
and standard fuel in Carbon Cub?
    Thanks

If this is a new Carbon Cub you will have to run it hard to break it in. I just brought a CC 0-340 back to Ga. and ran it at 2500 RPM all the way back burned 10 GPH for the 23 hr trip. It only used 1 qt. of oil for the trip.

It doesn't get any better than flying down the coast in a Carbon Cub -- and October is a great time to do it. The marine layer is not usually a factor, and the winter storms aren't coming in yet. If you like, I'll send you some pics of a trip we took up the coast from Northern Santa Barbara County to Half Moon Bay. After you see them, you'll definately want to take the trip yourself. If you do, give us a heads up when you're coming through San Luis Obispo County, on the California Central Coast. Join us for dinner, and we'll put a roof over your head for the night. Welcome to the Carbon Cub community!

    Hi John Hodges
Sounds great. would love to see some photos and come by SLO.
My E mail address is armaurer1@me.com
    Thanks for the invite.
I have had some replies that suggest the coast is
difficult but we really would enjoy the scenery
that Floridians don't get to see often.
    thanks
