My plan this winter was to essentially do the same as Troy stated, just starting with one side and if the results were positive add the second side if needed for Bruce and Glenn. Of course it’s neeely Feb and I’ve not found the time yet.

pete found a lot of low hanging fruit with his sealing up of the cabin. You can really gain a lot. I still use blue maskin tape on the upper door when it’s real cold. I will say the double muffs and the fan mod on my 17 SS is a lot better than the 10 SS I had. You can fly with no gloves down to about 15 now

DanL needs to jump in here with his vetterman system. That is the solution

"Low hanging fruit" he says, that's coming from a man who has left the cold behind who is now flying formation with Chuck in Florida. Pete let's not get distracted there is plenty of winter left! Chop Chop

Here’s a link to some pictures. With the Vetterman system, the change in the inlet and good sealing with thin weatherstripping, my EX is comfortable. There are times I even push the heat knob in because I’m too warm.

Talk about warm, this January is warmer than our November. Not a good ski flying month-only out twice so far.

Just to see the difference, here are some photos of the EX/FX3 system that I’m just finishing up. Note that also the exhaust pipes have “fins” on them inside the heat muffs that act as heat sinks to hold in the heat and also there is a naca duct on the bottom of the cowl that will have scat lines going into these heat muffs to blow the hot air into the plane.

You’ll notice that all 4 exhaust pipes are used. The muff on the (pilot) left side is going to a box that goes through the firewall and hooks into the built in vent in the carbon fiber left interior panel and goes to the rear seat with a vent outlet high and one low. Inside the cockpit is a box that you can then divert as much of that heat to the defroster as needed. The defroster is nice because it sends hot air up high.

The muff on the right side goes to the regular pilot floor vent.

Here are some cool infrared photos Brad Damm took showing the heat signatures of this system.

Would this exhaust fit on the 340? If it does, it would not be a big deal to make it all work for the carb engine.
