The issue may be that if insurance companies are rating the CC different from other similar tail-draggers, because of either the perceived or actual risk to insure them, then we all have a problem. Our current insurance, “Star” has had only modest increases, but nothing that would reflect that there is a higher premium for the CC. The other possibility is that the insurance companies are increasing rates for the level of pilot experience and that may not be only on the CC. It would be nice to know if anyone else has had a substantial increase without any change to whom is being insured. If the CC is getting a “poor insurance rating” it is likely because of the inherent characteristics of the tail wheel, not that it is a CC.

The CC is used in so many unusual environments with so many different skill levels, (LSA pilots to ATP’s) it seems that it would be impossible to insure on a one size fits all. If you land in 40K cross-winds, on the tundra, at night, in bad weather (there are owners that are quite capable of that) then maybe self-insurance is the best option.

Might be helpful to throw some numbers around. I am with AIG, I have 2 planes on the policy. $150K hull value on the Carbon Cub. I have 250 hours in type, 1250 TT taildragger. My son is also named as pilot on the CC, he has 250 TT, all tailwheel. Premium for the Carbon Cub is $1925, I cant remember the liability limists without digging it out, which will be good to review.

For comparison, I sold a 98 Scout with $100K hull, both pilots, the premium for that was $1480.
I know a couple Husky guys who are paying a lot more than I am. Also Maules are quite high.
