    Default Gear Options

    3x3 Gear
So what are the pro's and con's of the six current options offered.

    3x3 covered, uncovered

    3x3 HD covered, uncovered

    3x3 PA18 covered, uncovered

    HD Cabane? yes-no
    SS Brake lines? yes-no

What do you have, would you change it next time?
    Speed or just cool factor?
    Safety?
    Better STOL performance?
    Or anything else.

I like 3” extended gear but not 3” forward gear. I think that’s where the 3x3 term comes from. Looking at your list I think there is only one type of 3x3 available.

I do not like the 3” forward because I don’t want my tail to gain weight by shifting the pivot point farther forward as this gear does. I prefer to regulate the tail weight with cargo and keep it fairly light for easier movement by hand in the hangar and also I like to keep the tail up as long as I can when landing.

Depends on which model order form you are referring to. The FX-3 is now standard 3x3 with HD Cabane. The FX-3 gear has a cross piece in it that is handy as a step if you get the gear uncovered. Also if you order the uncovered gear you will be required to order the SS Brake Lines due to them being exposed and the SS being more durable than the poly brake line.

My last two aircraft FX-2 and FX-3 have both had 3x3 uncovered with SS Brake lines on 1.75" brakes with 31" tires. Wouldn't change a thing. With a lot of people unfamiliar with Cubs getting in and out of the aircraft frequently, I prefer the uncovered gear so that they aren't tempted to step right in the middle of the fabric area. With it being uncovered that temptation goes away.

Everyone has their own thoughts just like Dan likes to keep the tail up I prefer to 3 point as slow as possible and get stopped quicker and the 3x3 versus the 3 extended helps with this as I feel I can get on the brakes more aggressively

I've attached a good picture of the FX-3 3x3 Gear with the cross brace shown.

Do you think there is a speed consequence with uncover gear?

In my opinion not enough to matter and certainly not enough to offset someone stepping on the fabric and having to deal with the potential cosmetic issue. With the bigger tires, and the issues they bring in getting in and out of the bird I find guys looking for a place to step. With the uncovered gear and the crosspiece, there its a natural place to step and won't hurt anything. I am putting wing walk paint on the step to give it a little texture.

I prefer the straight HD 3”, standard tailwheel, uncovered ,31s,SS brake lines,13/4” brakes, 84” prop, little better angle of attack, prop clearance,SS brake line help keep the Teflon tube from expanding . I ran a Baby bush for about 6 months for me the baby bushwheels is a huge disadvantage for take off performance and for me unnecessary Ive been in the softest roughest spots as anybody never felt at a disadvantage they do look cool. The 3x3 is fine I don’t dislike it,I just prefer 3”,you have added tail weight when loaded really heavy and you lose some prop clearance over the 3”, braking probably better I haven’t noticed it enough to really matter to me. This may not be true on the FX3 with the CS prop on the nose 3x3 might be better option I’ll play with the gear when I get mine. Don’t know about speed can’t say I noticed anything, but fabric seemd to get some blemish on the under side of covered gear when your out playing. Plus I think it looks cool.Keeping the tail up with either one I have never found to be a issue it’s minimal extra forward pressure on the stick. I use to taxi with the tail up 3x3 with 2 people all the time.
If it for your S2 just put 35s on it 😀
