Here is what the heat side muffler looks like on my Debonair. There isn't much restriction in it, just a flame cone. Lots of heat. It's not really for comparison (that's an IO-520 with 3 cylinders going through it), but for what is needed to radiate heat.

My mechanic said that he brazed screws to a pipe in an RV-6 to get this kind of heat radiation. He said that worked very well. Only in experimentals, though...

Thats very interesting Paul, thanks. Somewhere in all my stuff I have seen this

I just cant find it, I was going to put it around the exhaust and try it. I think Beech had a good idea.

I had pretty good airflow thru the muff today when I flew, it was 15 degrees outside. Just not enough heat

My very low tech but effective way to stay warm on the occasional cold flight is to use to use a lightweight blanket. Throw it over the stick and floor vent. Lay it over my lap or drape it over my shoulders. Puts all the heat exactly where I need it.

One maybe wacky idea I had was to install a fan in the duct work to move more air. Since it's a 2 1/2 in duct, once could install one of these PM brushless air movers in front of the first cuff. It would have to move cold air. These ducted fans from the hobby world are amazing in performance. I'm sure this kind of blower would fill the cabin with heat. PM brushless motors are amazing in capability and cost. I think this one is less that $20. The drive electronics are inexpensive as well. This blower is so powerful, I'm sure it will have to be throttled down by 1/2. If you want to look at the specs, here's the eBay URL:

The other way to put a blower in the system is after the cuffs, after the air's been heated. There's more room in the engine compartment there, so this is an easier physical installation. The issue would be that we're moving hot air at that point and that would really mean the electric motor of that blower has to be in free air. Here a centrifugal blower would make sense.

It's an interesting problem. Keep the air mover light weight and low cost.

Thanks for the ideas Paul. I am back from my swing to warmer climes and have a few things to try. I have a couple 12v computer fans I am going to try. I like the look of the ducted fan. Adds more wt and complexity which is not in CubCrafters religion. Remove for summer, and realistically for me about 35 hrs ski fly in the winter. I know Glenn, you will get that on a good weekend

Used this in the Cub the past few days with good success. Plugs right into 12v outlet and provides ample heat to my backside during sub 20df temps. Bed, Bath and Beyond for $19.99. We'll see how long it lasts...

Millwaukee heated jacket. Works great, has 3 heat settings. Ive been wearing it everywhere. Red is a poor choice for a guy who cant stay clean. The jacket rocks, lasts 8 hrs on low.

I have made a couple of passes at more cabin heat with some real good results. I flew this morning for 1/2 hr at sunrise 5 below zero, the cabin pretty comfy. Not overblown yet, but were getting there. Will post up my changes when I get the thing where it looks good and works better. There is hope yet to fly with no gloves and hat.
