    Default Rib clamps and glue

    Hello,

Firstly I will introduce myself - I am Tim and I am building the first Carbon Cub in the UK. I have the kit and just started unpacking, reading manuals and preparing workshop. I am a previous builder of Vans RV7 RV4, and restored a Great Lakes.

While looking at the tools list - adding to my tool box - I noticed the 60 3" clamps. Looking at aircraft tools I see they are $10.95 each total $650 for clamps!! So far I just see them used for ribs and firewall (can use existing clamps I have for firewall). Assuming I need 60 to do all the ribs in one go.
I am seeking some guidance from other builders. Did you do all the ribs at the same time? Obviously an issue with opening glue. Did you do one wing at a time?
I have seen plastic versions of the clamps for a fraction of the price, anybody used them???

Just after a bit of feed back before I spend $650 on some clamps. If necessary I will do.

Tim, if you have the clamps for the firewall, you will have enough. You will do the firewall separate from the wings. Also, if you follow the instructions, you will have enough glue to finish your project. Only problem I had was not having enough tips for the epoxy. You may need to request more unless CC is sending more now. I finished in 2014.

It has been a while since I have looked at building wings but are they simple spring clamps? Something like this?

Thanks guys. I managed to find some in a tool shop in the UK for £4 about 50% cheaper than import from USA. I didn't look at the DIY shop clamps because I have found them nor very good in the past.

    Now time to start building....!!!

I am sure you could have gotten more clamps on these! LOL.

    Pete,

Those are exactly what I bought yesterday. $0.99 for the 1” and also $0.99 for the 2”. Good quality, almost as nice as Pony but for the price they are a really good deal. $60 = 60 clamps. I’m tooling up for my EX-2 build.

Tim - be reminded that spring clamps are sized in jaw opening. But the 3” clamps referred to in the manual are 3” overall length (so a bit confusing here) not three inch opening.

    Hope this is helpful,

    David

    David,

Just found this out the hard way.... 25Kg (55lbs) boxes arrived with my clamps in them... Yes. 3" Jaws. They have gone back. Reordered the correct size. Good part is they are less than half the price :-)
