    Default Electronic Ignition: Understanding Voltages

    Equipment:
    - Lightspeed Electronic Ignition
    - Garmin G3X Touch

I've got ignition on "right" and "backup" ignition switch "on" and the voltage shows 14.4 volts on the primary battery (charging) but the backup drops to 12.2 volts - should I be concerned?

When the key is on "both" and backup switched "off" both the primary and backup batteries are 14 volts (engine running).

Anyone understand what's going on? Can you help explain?

Mine does the same - it is normal. Here is a schematic I drew while building to figure out what the switch does.

When the backup switch is off, the voltage readout come from the charging bus. When the switch is on, it shows the voltage from the backup battery.

The Plasma minimum voltage for operating is 5.5 Volts.

    Thx Marcus!

I think on mine - Lightspeed - when the backup switch is off the voltages are similar but not identical. But I guess the point is if both are >14 volts they're both charging - including the backup battery.

During your run up, after checking left and right, do you check the backup by switching it on, with the ignition switch on "right"? Not quite sure how that's checking the backup function. You?

I usually just leave it on Both and flip the backup switch On, checking that there is voltage in battery and the I don't get any error indications. With the switch On only the backup battery is powering the right ignition module.

Here is the AFM entry, it shows that you are doing it properly.
