    Default North East fun

    CC Joe was in Tx playing on the gravel bars so I went North.

    Poor Joe and Jim Doody met me at Speculator for breakfast. Jim commented how sunny it was. We all headed north up to Indian lake and then Jim turned east and Joe turned west. I continued north and it was so smooth that I flew the gap of the Ausable gorge right on the deck and then played in the high peaks. Just south of Plattsburg I landed at a friends strip called Catalano and peed on his hangar door to let him know I had stopped in. Back west past Whiteface mt and then ran on the deck of all 3 Saranac lakes. Turned south and ran upper and lower Tupper lake, Forked lake and landed on Raquetta lake and had lunch on the tour boat tied to the dock in bubbling water. Got some efree gas from the snowmobile pump and played on a few more lakes on the way home. 5 hrs and over 350 miles, Awesome day.
    -17 below but warmed to 5F

    Great pics.

    I used to fly those lakes (over) when I few the A10 in the Ct ANG. Used to fly the area without a map but I couldn't do that now. :-) We used to go through the notch at the north end of Indian Lake (if I recall correctly) standing on a wing tip so we would fit though it.

    Great pics. Proof that you can still have fun with your Cub in the winter. The snow shoes strapped to the wing was a firm reminder of the amount of "fluff" on the ground.

    When I as flying around the Adirondacks in the winter I would always wear mukluks because it was environmentally appropriate. I am particular about what shoes I wear when I fly a tail wheel airplane. What is your shoe of choice in the winter when you go flying in your Cub?

    Wedged in feet are the precise reasons for having a particular pair of shoes to go fly with. I could not fly a J3 with those boots. :-)

    Hey Joe,
    Had a good time meeting up with you guys on Saturday. Thanks for the help.
    I'm limited until I get my skis but keep me posted as to your whereabouts and I'll drop supplies if needed. Check out Datum Skis and let me know what you think.

    I agree. I had a set of Trick Air skis on my Legend Cub and the drag of the tire was a BIG problem (nearly spent the night) in light deep snow. The Summits look like a better fit around the tire, but the Datums look like a better answer for mountain flying. In the mountains you are very much on your own and you need to know the skis will do their job.
