Default Smoke System in the CCEX

Having some fun installing a smoke system in my CCEX! Actually, more fun just thinking about going "smoke on" one day soon. Here's a few pictures of how I've installed my system.

The pump and reservoir is located right behind the rear seat. I installed a reinforcing plate beneath the floor of the baggage area, installed nutplates and the two brackets supplied by Smoking Airplanes. This whole apparatus can all be removed in a couple minutes.

The relay and breakers came pre-installed on a bracket which I covered with some carbon fiber vinyl. I anchored the relay/breakers under the panel to the frame. And the switch plate, complete with LED fit very nicely in the area next to the mixture control.

The system came from Smoking Airplanes. John has been helpful with the couple questions I had through installation.

    Paul -

That is the same smoke system I use. It works great! I look forward to making smokey passes with you. Maybe Johnson Creek next year?

Finished my smoke install yesterday. Here's 3 pictures showing the fitting and electrical hookup at the pump as well as the momentary switch. Jeff...definitely looking forward to smoke on with you

    Jeff/Paul,
Could either of you tell me the best location for the oil hose to come thru the firewall, I'm at the point where I need to make the hole.

Hi Steve. Looking at the firewall from the front, I came through 3" above the lower left engine mount hole and 2" to the left. If I had it to do over again I would have bumped it out to 2 1/2" to the left. Easier to get a tool in past the frame tube.

Couple other tips. Decide on your nozzle location and drill the exhaust collector before you install it. And use two plate large washers to compensate for thin firewall.

People on the ground LOVE watching smoking Cubs, you guys will love having the system!

We waited about two months for the weather to be just right for this photo shoot, and then it was just spectacular: completely still air to the point where the smoke from each pass didn't clear, just laid there. I was trying to fly right down on the water but it was so glassy that I could only get down so low by looking out sideways to the shore because the glassy water gave no visual altitude reference at all. Kind of scary really, float pilots know all about it as glassy water landings are part of the curriculum.
