Just put the new starter on that Cubcrafters is now offering. What a difference. No lag at the top of the compression. I have always had a struggle, now it seems to turn over 2 or 3 times faster with no lag at the top.

At the end of August (2012) CubCrafters announced the changes and improvements for the 2013 Carbon Cub line. One of those changes was a switch to a Hartzell starter that weighs 1.7 pounds less and cranks the CC340 over much better than the previous starter.
Press release from August here:

It can be retrofitted but requires the new 2013 style cowling because the nose of the Hartzell starter protrudes forward further.
All factory new Carbon Cubs from S/N 237 and on (about August 2012) have left the factory with the new starter.

My plane is #203, but was in for repair and I had the new style Cowl put on. Cubcrafters would know about the cowl. The only difference I can see is the housing is a little longer as it comes out over the starter gear. May be able to cut that off if needed. Would not spend the money on the new cowl just for that I don't think. Also was able to get the larger battery which made a big difference. It improved the air flow flow for the heater, but is still only blowing in warm air. I have sealed up the extended baggage and put felt around the flap openings. Seems to have made a difference.
The Hartzell starter will not fit in the old cowling due to the nose on it. There is a bearing in the nose of the starter so the nose cannot be removed. At this time the only way to get the new starter on an older aircraft is to upgrade the cowling. We are looking at other options and may possibly have other solutions in the future but I cannot commit to anything at this time.

Any new info on other starters for the old style cowling?
Bill
It does not sound like there will be a retrofit to change just the starter.

What is the cost of the complete starter upgrade (starter, cowling, ect)?
In the $10,000 range. For more cranking power on older aircraft, unless you need the increased cooling capacity provided by the 2013 cowl, a battery box retrofit that accommodates the larger Top Cub battery may make more sense.
