Default The Great Prosser Balloon Rally September 28-29-30 2012

This is a little late as it started today but anyone looking for something aviation related near Yakima should check out the Great Prosser Balloon Rally this weekend. You can fly in and camp on the field (S40). Restrooms and showers on the field as well as tie downs. (you may need to bring your own ropes though)

I drove down last year for the morning launch one day and the Saturday night glow. Might be flying down Saturday night this year for the night glow. If I do I'm going to camp out and stay for the launch on Sunday morning.

Pretty sights but isn't ballooning about as exciting as watching grass grow? ;-)

Giant propane burners? Standing right under something as huge as a house as it lifts away from you? Granted, no high speed flybys at an event like that but there are no fences and if one had the time a free ride is not out of the question. I turned down one offer to get on a chase crew because I had to get back to YKM.

It reminds me a little of stories from the early days of aviation. You can get as close as you want and there are no fences. If someone needs help holding something or hanging onto a basket as people board they grab whoever is closest.

The 3" numbers make me laugh!
